What is Pilates?
In the 1920’s, Joseph Hubertus Pilates developed a system of exercise that he called Contrology.
Today it is known as the Pilates Method. He developed a lifelong interest in body conditioning after a frail childhood, and though the benefits of his own discoveries went on to become an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast and boxer. He developed a full body conditioning workout consisting of about 500 designed movements performed on a mat or using specially-designed apparatus.
The Pilates Method combines the theories of Western disciplines, such as gymnastics, with Eastern philosophies of breathing and mental conditioning. It focuses mainly on the abdominal region and lower back, the body’s natural centre of balance and energy. The result is a strong, healthy, supple body, with long, toned muscles.
Pilates is an all over body workout, connecting the mind to the muscles, increasing strength and stamina with improving flexibility at the same time.
The Pilates method became popular amongst professional dancers and athletes, and today this programme has evolved so all can enjoy the benefits; improved fitness, strength and flexibility, and also improved balance, posture and self-awareness.
I must be right. Never an aspirin. Never injured a day in my life. The whole country, the whole world, should be doing my exercises. They’d be happier.
Joseph PilatesBased on lifelong study
Joseph Pilates’ methods are based on his lifelong study of the principles underlying and governing the laws of nature.
Can replace bad habits with new ones
He believed that incorrect habits are responsible for most of our ailments, and that through proper education it is possible to replace bad habits with new ones.
“not too much, not too little”
He considered many methods of movements. China, India, the Greeks and Roman philosophies too. The common denominator was “not too much, not too little”.
Correct the bad, improve the good
It is possible to trace the point at which balance and equilibrium were disrupted. Knowing this would enable you to understand how to correct and eliminate the bad, which will in turn improve the good.
Control equilibrium in movement
He believed that scoliosis and curvature of the spine or any disruption in the natural development of the body is often caused by coaxing and encouraging children to stand and then walk before their limbs were strong enough to support them or have the mental capacity to control their equilibrium in movement.
Spinal flexibility
He believed spinal flexibility is an accurate way of determining your true age, and that fortunately the spine lends itself quite readily to correction.
Concentrate on the purpose of the exercises
The only requirements of Pilates are that you must always faithfully and without deviation follow the instructions accompanying the exercises and always keep your mind wholly concentrated on the purpose of the exercises as you perform them.
